Kay Sayre, age 84, of Jefferson, passed away peacefully March 26, 2022. The family held graveside services at Franklin Township Cemetery in Cooper.
Kay was born on July 18, 1937, in Greene County to Russel and Dorothy Mooney. She grew up on a farm south of Cooper where she loved riding her horse and being a sister to Kenny. She enjoyed playing high school basketball and working at the Ice Cream Cottage after moving to Scranton.
She met her future husband, Dale Sayre, in Scranton. Dale and Kay were married on June 17, 1956 in Scranton. Shortly thereafter they moved to Jefferson where they raised their family. Kay worked at the hospital for many years before retiring and taking care of her family. Dale and Kay spent many summers traveling to Texas to visit family and following their grandchildren’s activities.
Kay didn’t know a stranger and was always visiting with friends, cooking, and could be found wearing an embroidered Grandma shirt.
She loved spending time with children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She talked about them to everyone she knew. In addition to her family, she also thought of herself as a grandmother to her grandchildren’s friends. She baked hundreds of cookies for family gatherings and other special events.
Kay was preceded in death by her husband Dale; her parents, Russel and Dorothy Mooney; an infant sister, Faye D. Mooney; son-in-law Randal Busby; and many aunts, uncles, and great friends.
She is survived by her children Floyd (Becky) Latta of Cedar Rapids, Julie (Chuck) McDonald of Keller, TX, and Jody (Chris) Orchard of Jefferson; grandchildren Shane Latta, Elissa (Jarrod) Goettsch, Chris (Christina) Schuttler, Nicholas (Lauren) Schuttler, Thomas (Katie) Schuttler, Katie (Taylor) Weicht, and Jennifer (Eric) Webb; and many great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
The family was assisted by Slininger-Schroeder Funeral Home of Jefferson.
